Naam project
Mount Saint Michael Secondary School Aliade, Benue State, Nigeria.
in slechte staat.

Mount Saint Michael Secondary School Aliade. 11th October 2004
Brief history of Mount Saint Michael Secondary School/Needs proposal
The coming of the missionaries to Nigeria was a blessing to the educational
sector of the
country. Almost all the schools in Nigeria were built and managed by the missionaries
authorities. In northern Nigeria the missionaries found the business of establishing
school
very difficult, because the royal fathers at that time believed that the missionaries
are out to kill their ancient traditional values and take over power from them.
These are some of the reasons why educational development in northern Nigeria
was at snail speed.
Thus Mount Saint Michael
Secondary School Aliade was established on 2nd February 1953. Mount Saint Michael's
College Aliade occupies a land of about 50 hectares, located three kilometres
away from Aliade town along Taraku - Otukpo Road, Gwer Local Government Area
of Benue State, Nigeria.
The first principal of Mount
Saint Michael's Secondary School Aliade was Fr. Henry Pass (CSSp). The school
took-off with a total staff strength of two staff. Fr. Henry Pass who was the
principal and Fr. Dewinton. Mount Saint Michael is the second oldest Missionary
institution in northern Nigeria, after St. Paul's Secondary School Zaria, now
Kufena College, Wusasa, Kaduna State. From the date of establishment of Mount
Saint Michael's Secondary School in 1953, the school has eleven principals to
date; with the first indigenous principal, Mr. Athanisius Angereke in 1972 (till
1977). Mr. Angereke was also a former student of Mount Saint Michael's Secondary
School from 1957 with admission number 120.
Today one can find Mt. St.
Michael products in virtually all spheres of life. Indeed it is not an exaggeration
to say that Mount Saint Michael College Aliade has made serious contributions
to the overall development of the northern region in particular and Nigeria
in general.
Some of the notable products
of the Mt. St. Michael's Secondary School are: The Arch. Bishop of Abuja Dioceses,
Rt. Rev. Dr. John O. Onaiyekon, who joined the college in 1957 with admission
number 139; the present Tor Tiv, the 1V Dr. Alfred Akawe Torkula a first class
chief in the State who joined Mt. St. Michael's College in 1960, with admission
number 270. The college produced two vice chancellors at the Benue State University,
Professor Charles Vajime who was the first V.C. of the Benue State University
Makurdi and now Professor David Ker, he was also a student of Mount Saint Michael's
College from 1964, with admission number 466. The list is too long to be accommodated
in this write up.
The Mount Saint Michael's College celebrated her Golden Jubilee in 2003. The
fact is that the school facilities are fast decaying amidst other needs. The
school is up till date without a fence and the road leading to the school is
bad. Some of the residential houses are near death traps and lack of water on
the school premises.
The present principal of the college Mr. Charles Orbunde who is the eleventh
principal, is begging for assistance from well meaning individuals and organization
to help bail the school from the claws of decay.
The school has the problem
of shortage of teaching staff. The school needs renovation of some of her classes.
Current areas of needs
1. The school library needs to be developed by the provision of books, ranging
from encyclopaedias, language books such as French, English, general books and
reading tables/chairs etc.;
2. Provision of standard water bore hole in the school premises;
3. Procurement of an 18 seater bus for students use;
4. The provision of general sports equipment among others;
5. The provision of drugs for the sick bay.
We would be grateful to
all who will consider our distress call for assistance and we humbly
assure you of the judicious use of all resources, with regards,
Thanks,
Yours faithfully,
