Brief History/Background
For the past five years, we the spiritans have been involved in youth development in this part of Nigeria. We run the University Chaplaincy, we run the St. Joseph's parish, we do networking organizing youth social and religious programmes under the following auspices: Nigeria Conference of Chaplains of Tertiary Institutions (NACCTIN); Association of Men and Women Religious Missionaries.
Dealing with the youths all these years in this region has given us an opportunity to tackle their difficulties: mass exodus of the cities; cultism; boredom and idleness; hooliganism;
street children; urchins; advances fee fraud (419); exam malpractices; impersonation and cheating.

Introduction
We are a group of missionaries part of whose charism is Youth Apostolate. Our order was founded in France in 1703, and Nigeria, once evangelised by German, French and Irish spiritans is now sending out missionaries to other countries. Yet Nigeria itself is deeply a missionary country. Here in Ijebu-Ode we are assisting young people irrespective of their ethnic or religious background to find their footing. We observed that youths here desert their villages due to witchcraft, occultism, unemployment, boredom, lack of sports facilities and recreation facilities. We however believe that youth flight and bad conduct including juvenile delinquency could be arrested. We started off in 2000 by providing sport facilities for the local youths as well as the nearby university students. The university is a non-residential one and little or no effort is made by the authorities to provide sports and recreation facilities.
Hence after lectures students are forced to go into all sorts of social ills and violence. We put up a small basketball court and recreation facility. We organized annual sports competitions. Sooner or later the youths began to enjoy their villages; they now come home for holidays. Many enrolled in the village schools. With sports as a bait, we started programmes in character formation, youths integration, development and counselling. The results were tremendous. Our available space could no longer contain us. We now began a search for a bigger parcel of land. We succeeded in this. Through our local efforts, we have now constructed a modern basketball court. But the standards we have set have attracted so many youths that we need for more facilities, including a dressing room and counselling room.

Goals and Objectives
1. To provide sports and recreation facilities for local youths;
2. To minimize juvenile delinquencies and youths misconduct by providing alternative programmes that will tap their energy and youthful exuberance;
3. To instil a sense of discipline using sports and games as tools;
4. To assist young people to learn to maintain calm, recollection, serenity and order in a nation where chaos, disorder, noise and commotion are the order of the day, through drilling them in at least 30 minutes meditation exercise before each sports event;
5. To inculcate in youths the need to have good character formation and sincerity in a society where youths and students are the last to be believed or trusted by everyone.
Hence the motto of the centre is: "Let Your Yes be Yes", "Let your No be No".

Expected Benefits
- Reducing anti-social activities of the youths to the barest minimum;
- Making the young people feel they are loved and cared for;
- Offering youths better alternatives;
- Helping youths harness their exuberance, vibrancy, talents, energy, intelligence, skills and spirituality;
- Proper utilization of extra-curricula opportunities, breaks, holidays and free time;
- Counselling youths on the use of time, energy, vocation in life, healthy interpersonal relationship, public life and character formation;
- Through exchange programmes with their counterparts abroad, the youths will compare notes and ventilate their own ideas;
- Keeping fit, healthy and balanced.

Justification
- Government has not even provided basic amenities not to talk of sports and recreation facilities.

Target Population
- Under eleven
- Under Seventeen
- Under Twenty-five.

Methodology
- Sports as a tool for character formation;
- Recreation as a trap or bait for youth mobilization;
- Meditation and counselling exercises as methodology for inculcating discipline, patience, decency, manners, hygiene and forbearance;
- Sports clubs and tournaments as a tool for inculcating healthy competitive and sports spirit;
- Centre membership, distribution of roles, assignment and group leadership as a means of leadership training;
- Training and competition time-table and schedules as a methodology for teaching time consciousness, sense of urgency and seriousness with work.

Location/Venue
The kick-off centre is at Oru-Ijebu, Ogun State, but every graduating member must pledge to found a centre alone or in concert later in future. The vision is to spread the centre nationwide.

Our Request in the Order of Preference
We request for funding to build a Hall of meeting, counselling and meditation. A section of the Hall shall have a dressing room and rest department, indoor games could be played here and people could have a place to relax besides a canteen or bar. Second, we need to construct a volleyball court for girls since most girls do not play basketball here. Third, we need a lawn tennis court and a swimming pool.

Local Contribution
We have already sourced and got landed property. We have additionally constructed a good basketball court.

Management
We are an order of priests, part of whose charism is youth apostolate. So we shall naturally run the place in conjunction with the youth leaders. Other needed staff shall be employed and paid by us locally.

Maintenance
Every member or youth user of the centre must be dualy registered. An affordable registration fee and annual dues must be paid by all registered youths. With this, the centre will be maintained. Where there is need for more assistance, the parents/guardians of youths shall be invited for assistance.

Follow-up and evaluation
For a proper evaluation of the project, a body has been constituted to monitor and evaluate the running of the centre. Proper book-keeping shall be enforced to ensure transparency.

Every facility in the centre as well as the centre itself shall be named after the donor(s).

Conclusion
The youths are not like the adults. To mobilize them and care for their spiritual and physical well-being, the church has to use strategies that will attract them. We cannot wait in the manner of 'En attendant Godot' for the government to carry out this responsibility alone. This centre is an effort to concert effort with the government and your Agency to achieve the above noble goals.
